In a departure from the climbing vines that define its Lincoln Park setting, the Chicago-based university has broken ground on a $69-million Theatre School Building whose translucent facade seeks to open a window to the world of the performing arts.The architect is New York City-based Pelli Clarke Pelli rather than longtime DePaul collaborator Antunovich Associates, a local firm whose masonry-oriented architecture complemented both the campus and its surrounding neighborhood.The Pelli concept, which locates a window wall on the
HILBOLDT Jane Hilboldt has been named central regional director with Women Construction Owners and Executives USA, an organization representing women owners and executives in the construction industry. Hilboldt, who is one of six regional directors for WCOE, is chairman and CEO of Hilboldt Curtainwall Inc., St. Louis. William F. Baker, a partner with Chicago-based architect/engineer Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, has received a 2011 Outstanding Projects and Leaders Lifetime Award for Design from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Lakeview, an 800,000-sq-ft luxury condominium in Chicago's Lincoln Park. The two systems allow general contractor Walsh Construction Co., Chicago, to build the structure's two cores as quickly as its horizontal slabs, thereby speeding up construction time. GANDHI BORDERS Zach Borders, an associate with the Chicago office of architect/engineer HOK, will serve as chairman of the first-ever junior board for Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. The board raises awareness of educational outreach programs associated with the facility and also helps support restoration and preservation of the landmark building. Borders is an urban designer and certified planner with HOK’s planning group. George Vukelich has joined the Chicago office of engineer Clark Dietz Inc. as a business development professional for the firm’s civil/environmental group. On The Scene March 28, 2011 Milwaukee’s ‘Moderne’ Age Rick Barrett (left), developer with Milwaukee-based Barrett Visionary Development, and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett toasted the late February groundbreaking of The Moderne, a $55.2-million, 30-story apartment building whose design seeks to reinterpret the Art Moderne movement. “The Moderne is iconic, and helps to underscore the transformation of Milwaukee to a contemporary urban metropolis where professionals of all ages want to live, work and play,” Rick Barrett remarked during the ceremony. The union rights controversy isn�t confined to Wisconsin or teachers. Newly seated Republican majorities in several budget-strapped states have swung legislative wrecking balls at some of the pillars of the building trades, including prevailing wages and project labor agreements. In Ohio, where newly elected Gov. John Kasich (R) has pledged to cut costly regulations, new Republican lawmakers have provided a substantial majority in the state Senate. A bill originating in the Ohio House of Representatives would prohibit state funding on any local government project built under a project labor agreement. The Chicago office of architect and engineering consultant HOK has named Robert Bistry vice president and practice leader for the firm’s architecture practice. In addition, the firm has named David Genc as senior associate and senior project director and Andre Baros as associate and project architect. In addition to working with HOK’s architecture practice, both Genc and Baros will work with the firm’s international studio. All three employees are new to the firm.
