Construction has officially begun on the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project, with installation of permanent piles that will make up the foundation of the new bridge. Construction on the long-awaited, twin span, named New NY Bridge, is expected to be completed in 2018 and cost under $4 billion, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office. Four teams have been selected to compete for a $2.4-billion project to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal Building (CBT), says a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) spokesman. PANYNJ will conduct $1.2 billion in infrastructure upgrades in addition to the project, he says. The four finalists have until April 15, 2014 to submit their request for proposals (RFPs). The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has completed 1,500 ft of track reconstruction in the Bronx fifteen days after 10 cars of a 24-car CSX freight train carrying the city's trash derailed. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the accident, which occurred on Metro-North Railroad’s (MNR) Hudson Line near Spuyten Duyvil Station. Recovery work began immediately following the accident and is estimated to cost $1 million to $2 million, says Marjorie Anders, an MTA spokeswoman.
