The optimal acoustical design called for lofty, 48-ft-high ceilings, resulting in 680,000 cu ft of volume—greater than halls with more than three times as many seats. Keeping an Art Deco printing plant administration building out of harm's way while a $100-million museum is built under, in and around it requires some fancy falsework and delicate footwork.
