Steven Tipping is developing and engineering what is likely the world's smallest seismically isolated structure. The 7,500-sq-ft building in Berkeley about a half-mile from California's Hayward fault is an investment property as well as an office expansion.
In September, the American Concrete Institute plans to publish a guide to help engineers meet the requirements of ACI's first model code for the repair of existing structural-concrete buildings.

Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of the year on the 9-million-sq-ft campus of Egypt's National Cancer Institute. When the campus is finished, NCI, already the largest comprehensive cancer center in the Middle East, Europe and Africa, will be able to serve 1.7 million patients each year. The campus, located on a 35-acre site in Giza’s Sheik Zayed City, also will be an international center for cancer research and education. A proposed standard to create smart facilities supporting smart grids, written by ASHRAE and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, is open for public review until Oct. 6. ASHRAE/NEMA Standard 201P, Facility Smart Grid Information Model would provide a common basis for electrical energy consumers to describe, manage and communicate about electrical energy consumptions and forecasts. The 201P also is being considered for adoption as an international standard through the International Organization for Standardization. In addition, the standard coordinates with and uses content from the International Electrotechnical Commission’s Common Information Model (CIM) standards. It also coordinates with the North American Energy Standards
Daniel W. Falconer, the American Concrete Institute's managing director of engineering, died on July 29 in Hartland, Mich., after a 16-month battle with colon cancer.
This summer, Denis Hayes is “off the grid.” But Seattle’s celebrated sun worshipper— known for growing Earth Day into a global environmental movement and for masterminding a living laboratory for ultra-green commercial office buildings—is not lying on a beach soaking up the rays.
The 52,000-sq-ft Bullitt Center, considered the greenest building in the world, is a tangible representation of the way Denis Hayes, Bullitt Foundation’s president and CEO since 1992, has altered the course of the environmental group.
Seattle’s Living Building Pilot Program, a 2009 city ordinance created to remove regulatory and other impediments to the development of ultra-green buildings, would likely never have seen the light of day if not for Denis Hayes, president and CEO of the nonprofit Bullitt Foundation.
A new standard for design guidance on legionellosis is currently available from ASHRAE, formerly known as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015, Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems, sets minimum legionellosis-risk-management requirements for water systems.ASHRAE developed the standard in response to the 8,000 to 10,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported each year in the U.S. More than 10% of those cases are fatal, says Tom Watson, chair of the ASHRAE committee that wrote the standard. Legionella can also cause a less-severe influenza-like illness known as Pontiac Fever. The standard is targeted for use by
