Virtually all major indicators, from backlogs to construction employment data, indicate that Midwest construction activity continues to lag activity in other regions. Worse, recent data suggest the gap is widening.
Chicago, the economic engine that drives Illinois, if not the region, remains largely idle, as does construction activity there, save for a handful of good-size building projects and the usual seasonal road work. As Anirban Basu, chief economist with Associated Builders & Contractors, recently observed, ““Chicagoans will want to forget the early years after the Great Recession.”
Perhaps because they are larger, more diversified and operating in more regional markets, the Midwest's Top Contractors fared comparatively well last year, collectively outpacing their performance in 2011.
