Construction activity in the Midwest hasn't improved significantly in the past year, nor have economic conditions in key states such as Illinois, burdened with the third-worst unemployment rate in the nation.
To some extent, conditions are reflected in the performance of the region's top contractors. A handful of firms had an extraordinary year, but most logged relatively minor gains or losses. Ohio heated up some. Indiana cooled. Collectively, not much change.
For some time now, economists have predicted the Midwest, the weakest of the nation's regions, is poised for at least moderate growth. Perhaps this will be the year.
