Nearly 250 of the region’s top construction professionals attended ENR MidAtlantic’s Best Regional Project Awards on Nov. 1 at the Sheraton Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore.
The awards are a series of special events across the country to celebrate and honor project teams that created the "best" regional projects of 2016. The projects are selected by juries of local prominent industry professionals. The winning projects will automatically compete in ENR’s national Best of the Best Projects competition. Those winners will be recognized at an awards event in April in New York City.
Categories awarded cover a wide variety, including best Best Green, Best K-12 Education and Best Renovation/Restoration, to name just a few. This year, the MidAtlantic region received 65 entries from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The four companies that were recognized in the pages of ENR MidAtlantic throughout 2016 as our firms of the year were also recognized: (Owner of the Year: PennDOT; Design Firm of the Year: Whitman Requardt & Associates; Contractor of the Year: DAVIS Construction and Specialty Contractor of the Year: Atlantic Constructors).
This year’s Legacy Award winner was Irvin E. Richter. The chairman emeritus of Hill International was introduced by his son David Richter, who succeeded his father as CEO at Hill International.
“He’s been my mentor for most of my business career,” the younger Richter said. “I couldn’t have had a better one.”
The elder Richter also showered his son with praise.
“David is the epitome of every father’s dream who starts a business and that is to have his son succeed him,” he said.
The event concluded with the awarding of this year’s MidAtlantic Project of the Year to the Blue Plains Tunnel in the District of the Columbia.
ENR will begin taking submissions for the 2017 Regional Best Project awards in April.
