As its work in the MidAtlantic region fuels its overall growth, Harkins Builders Inc. has been named the 2024 ENR MidAtlantic Contractor of the Year.

The Columbia, Md.-based firm will be profiled in the August issue of ENR MidAtlantic, which will feature the region's annual Top Contractor rankings.

Harkins will also be honored at the ENR MidAtlantic Regional Best Projects Awards this fall.

Harkins nearly doubled its overall national revenue in 2023 to more than $700 million, up from $450 million in 2022. The firm credits this “remarkable increase” to its growth in the MidAtlantic region, where the firm performs 85% of its work.

The employee-owned firm also opened offices in Richmond, Va. and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. last year. “This expansion not only amplified the firm’s geographic presence but also reaffirmed its commitment to serving diverse communities along the East Coast,” the firm says. “This expansion set the stage for future opportunities in the growing market and contributed to its revenue growth.”

The firm’s training and development department also recently implemented a new learning management system for employees. And its Capital Reinvestment Program encourages employees to submit innovative ideas for company funding. The program has already created nine projects that have saved resources or created revenue streams.

The firm also started The Harkins Foundation, an employee-operated non-profit organization. The foundation donated more than $200,000 to various organizations and supported more than 40 charitable causes in its first full year of operation last year.

The firm’s top three projects in the region include:

Twin Rivers
Harkins helped this long-term client, Enterprise Community Development, achieve a major milestone of one million homes. The 153-unit modern and sustainable mixed income community offers a variety of amenities, including a leasing office, management office, business center, fitness center, homework room, mail room, dog park, playground, and cast-in-place below-grade parking for residents.

The Ruby at Somerset
Named after jazz vocalist Ruby Glover, it is part of Baltimore's Perkins Somerset Oldtown Transformation Plan. This mixed-income community features a 72-unit apartment building with amenities such as a private parking garage, fitness room, business center, and club room with a kitchenette. The building's structure combines concrete and wood frame construction with a vibrant exterior design blending brick, fiber cement siding, and Nichiha Illumination panels.

Brightview Hunt Valley
Located in Cockeysville, Md. the senior living community offers 178 units. This seven-story building features two stories of structured parking within a concrete podium, topped by five-and-a-half stories of residential and amenity spaces, using both combustible and non-combustible construction methods. The design includes two large landscaped rooftop terraces above the parking podium. Inside, residents will enjoy more than 60,000 sq ft of common space, including amenities such as a theater, fitness center, commercial kitchen, libraries, lounges, card rooms, salon, art studio, and more. The project is notable for aligning with the current construction trend of developing on mall parking lots, making use of previously unused spaces.

Harkins ranked No. 23 on last year’s ENR MidAtlantic Top Contractor list with $371.64 million in regional revenue. The previous year, the firm ranked No. 33 with $253 million in regional revenue.
