Each year, ENR California selects one owner or developer with active construction projects as the magazine’s Owner of the Year. With so much work going on throughout the state, there's no shortage of innovative developers and owners to choose from. The winning firm will be highlighted in the April print issue.
ENR California's 2015 Owner of the Year is Sutter Health. The forward-thinking, non-profit health care provider has long been a pioneer in the use of lean principles and integrated project delivery in California, and the group’s techniques have been studied and adopted by other major owners. Since 2000, Sutter Health has invested more than $7 billion in direct construction costs to improve or build health care facilities, which the group says translates into creating or sustaining nearly 200,000 jobs. Over the last couple of years, the organization performed major earthquake safety-related hospital replacements and renovations in Santa Rosa, Oakland and Sacramento totaling $2 billion.
Currently, Sutter Health is constructing the $2-billion California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco – leading a collocated, integrated team by using principals such as integrated project delivery, target value design, lean processes and prefabrication.

Sutter Health also says it gave $901 million back to the community in 2013, its largest amount ever, through “traditional charity care and unreimbursed costs of providing care to Medi-Cal patients, as well as investments in health education and public benefit programs such as community clinics and prenatal care for low-income patients.”
