I snapped this photo while on a recent hardhat tour of Roosevelt University's 32-story vertical campus under construction in downtown Chicago. This friendly little plaque greets you as you walk onto the hoist.
Operating engineers on construction sites often have a unique sense of humor. And they are enterprising—some elevator operators scratch out a side living selling candy bars and other wares to the trades.
There was no candy on this hoist. Just a reminder to appreciate what the operator does every day. Especially when you are 300 feet in the air, and your life is totally in his hands.
