Houston-based Sempra Infrastructure has been named ENR Texas & Louisiana Owner of the Year after a busy year in the energy sector and efforts to invest in positive community impact.
Sempra Infrastructure will be profiled in the April 14 edition of ENR Texas & Southeast, the combination of the former Texas & Louisiana and Southeast regions.
In July 2024, the firm pushed ahead with the second phase of expanding its Port Arthur, Texas, LNG facility, awarding a fixed-price engineering, procurement and construction contract to Bechtel for the project, set to include two liquefaction trains capable of producing roughly 13 metric tons per year of LNG, doubling plant capacity to 26 metric tons per year
The project’s first phase is under construction, set to start commercial operation for two trains in 2027 and 2028.
Sempra's project in Port Arthur also includes two 600-plus-acre marshland restoration projects at the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area north of Sabine Pass. To fight erosion, nearly 5 million cu yds of sediment will be pumped into the two marsh areas, providing a base for native vegetation to return. Other local efforts include grants to 18 hunger-relief organizations alongside Bechtel, which is the LNG terminal contractor.
Farther south, the firm is pursuing solar electrification projects throughout Mexico via its Sempra Infrastructure Foundation, which in 2024 partnered with organizations like the Mexican Red Cross to donate funds and install solar panels at local hospitals.
At the helm is CEO Justin Bird, cited last October as the Energy Leader of the Year as part of the Gulf Energy Information Excellence Awards, which also cited the firm’s Growing Responsibilities and Opportunities for Women program for its progress in DE&I.
GROW, launched in 2020, has more than 365 members and focuses on building women’s leadership capacity through fostered development and networking opportunities, per Sempra Infrastructure.
