For the third year, ENR Southeast is pleased to announce the recipient of our Legacy Award. The honor recognizes individuals who have demonstrated significant lifelong contributions to the industry as a whole and to their chosen professions. To date, Southeast Legacy Award winners have included Pat Rodgers, president and CEO of Rodgers Builders, Charlotte; Tom Murphy Jr., CEO of Coastal Construction Group, Miami; and Bill Pinto, the retired COO and principal with the former Hardin Construction Co., Atlanta.
As ENR noted at the time we established the Legacy Award program, the award recognizes those people "who have established a solid 'legacy' of lifetime service to the A/E/C industry and to their colleagues. Movers. Shakers. Mentors. True professionals who have gone above and beyond for decades."
This year, ENR Southeast’s Legacy Award goes to Miller Gorrie, chairman of general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie. That company’s history dates back to 1964, when Gorrie purchased the construction assets of the Thos. C. Brasfield company.
As the contractor’s history further reports: “Miller purchased the name of Brasfield’s company, which had a strong reputation in the Birmingham community, and then built his own company from the ground up…. In 1967, Miller changed the company’s name and moved its offices to the current headquarters in Birmingham.” He continued as chief executive officer until 2011, when he turned that role over to Jim Gorrie. Today, he continues to serve as chairman.
A long list of accolades illustrates Mr. Gorrie’s business and industry achievements, including membership in the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame, Alabama Business Hall of Fame and the Alabama AGC Construction Hall of Fame, among others. Additionally, he is the namesake of the M. Miller Gorrie Construction Center at Auburn University, which was dedicated in 2006.
We’ll have much more about Miller Gorrie in the January print edition of ENR Southeast. Additionally, ENR Southeast will honor the Brasfield & Gorrie chairman at our annual Best Projects Awards luncheon, to be held Nov. 15 in Orlando.
