Across the country, contractors are reporting continuing strength in U.S. construction markets, as noted by ENR’s recently published Top 400 Contractors ranking.
In 2017, “The domestic market was one of strong, steady growth for large contractors,” ENR’s Gary Tulacz reported. While the Top 400 reports firms’ worldwide revenue grew by 2.1%, Tulacz said the domestic construction economy marked “the real story” of 2017.
“Contracting revenue from U.S. projects rose a healthy 4.9%,” Tulacz wrote. That rate was down compared to the past two years, which posted gains of 9.4% and 9.5%, respectively. When compared to the 18.4% decline that Top 400 firms reported from projects located outside the U.S., though, 2017’s growth rate looks pretty solid.
Preliminary results from ENR Southeast’s own Top Contractors survey indicate similar growth in 2017 contracting revenue from the region that includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Puerto Rico. In this latest survey, contractors working in the Southeast collectively reported approximately $36.7 billion in revenue. That’s up about 8.5% compared to the previous year’s survey, where firms reported roughly $33.8 billion in revenue. (The revenue numbers listed here may change by the time of the ranking’s June 25 print publication date.)
How long the expansion continues is up for debate, though. Contractors, as is their tendency, are remaining optimistic that the good times can continue for a while longer, Tulacz writes about this year’s Top 400 Contractors. But time will tell.
Though the deadline for ENR Southeast’s Top Contractors survey has passed, it remains open for firms that would like to participate. Currently, ENR Southeast estimates the depth of this year’s Top Contractors ranking at about 120 firms.
Below, as a preview of this year’s ranking—which publishes in ENR Southeast's June 25th print edition—we're including a list of the "Top 100" firms, in alphabeticall order. (The final top 100 may change due to ENR Southeast receiving additional surveys.)
