Just more than a month after two workers died in Boston after a water main break flooded the trench they were working in, another water break early Wednesday morning flooded city streets, this time setting off several manhole fires in Chinatown.
The water flow at the corner of Washington and Kneeland streets was shut off about three hours after the 5:15 a.m. The 20-inch cast-iron pipe on Washington Street was permanently repaired by Wednesday afternoon before water service was restored and roads were open, Boston’s Water and Sewer Commission spokeswoman Gina DeNapoli said.
“Road closures have since then been lifted and city officials are in the process of repaving the road in the affected area,” said DeNapoli, who also added that the cause of the water main break was undetermined.
The fires were reportedly started when underground electrical wiring in them were short circuited by the water.
