A fifth generation, family-run mechanical contractor dating back to 1891, E.M. Duggan has a lot of notches in its belt—which now includes ENR New England’s 2022 Specialty Contractor of the Year.
The Canton, Mass.-based firm will be featured in the September issue of ENR New England along with the Top Specialty Contractor rankings, which will include firms from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
E.M. Duggan ranked No. 3 on the 2021 ENR New England Top Specialty Contractor rankings with $185 million in regional revenue. On the 2020 survey, the firm ranked No. 3 with $233.5 million. In 2019, the firm ranked No. 2 with $212 million in revenue.
On ENR’s 2021 national Top 600 ranking of specialty contractors, E.M. Duggan ranked 159.
The firm was one of the first trade partners in Massachusetts to embrace Lean manufacturing at its prefabrication facilities. It credits this success to bottom-up communication and says it believes “in a culture where everyone is valued, heard and is part of the Duggan team.” The firm continues, “We encourage an open-door policy and welcome ideas and strategies from everyone.”
The firm says it continues to add new divisions “that work in unison, allowing us to be a full- service company.”
E.M. Duggan works with approximately 30 local and national charities. They hold food and coat drives in house and donate time and supplies to those in need. They also encourage employees to get involved in a cause. The firm matches employee contributions.
The firm has also supported Ukraine. In one week, the Duggan team delivered 30 large boxes of brand new clothing and essential items to the Ukraine Church in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. They also created long sleeve shirts with the Ukraine flag that said Glory to Ukraine and have remained in contact with one of the shirt’s recipients.
The firm’s top projects include:
BU Data Science Center: Scheduled to open in October 2022, E.M. Duggan is performing plumbing, HVAC and fire protection. The tallest building on campus will bring the mathematics and statistics and computer science departments under one roof.
