This year’s Best Projects contest covered work completed between May 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021. In other words, the period of time that saw the COVID-19 pandemic at its most virulent and impactful to broad sections of the U.S. economy, including the construction industry.
Originally scheduled to begin construction in April 2020, the terminal was temporarily grounded along with the rest of the U.S. commercial aviation industry by the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite an earthquake, a pandemic and design changes, the first phase of Salt Lake City International Airport’s (SLC) $4.1-billion upgrade opened to passengers on time on Sept. 15.
