Situated in Duluth, Minn., on the shore of Lake Superior, St. Mary’s Medical Center is a major regional medical hub serving patients in northern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

A 19th-century timber building, which previously served as a tannery, now is home to an R&D facility that is developing 3D printed lungs for transplant.<

Using an integrated project delivery method, the team renovated MEP systems serving more than 1 million sq ft in the occupied hospital’s duPont Pavilion that did not meet current National Electrical Code for emergency electrical distribution. The HVAC system had also exceeded its serviceable life.

Nestled into the north shore of Lake Superior, the city of Duluth, Minn., sits at the westernmost point of the Great Lakes. Formed by the glaciers that created the lakes themselves, much of Duluth’s Central Hillside neighborhood is built into a rocky, iron-rich slope with soil no deeper than 20 ft to 30 ft at any point and much of it is exposed rock.
