U.S. DOT says projects funded by the grants will reduce the risk of methane leaks.

The proposal would affect more than two million miles of gas distribution lines in the U.S. It was spurred by a fatal 2018 gas explosion in Massachusetts.

Final U.S. Transportation Dept. regulation aims to cut risks in lines that carry natural gas, carbon dioxide and other hazardous liquids.

With 95% of gas meters relit as of Dec. 5, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts appears to be on track to meet its self-imposed deadline to restore natural gas service to Massachusetts in the wake of a series of massive gas explosions.
