A 3.2-mile, fixed-span bridge with a 65-ft clearance and two 12-ft travel lanes will replace an aging swing span bridge prone to outages along a critical state route.
Maintaining Route 12, the main highway serving the barrier island of Hatteras Island, N.C., is a near-constant battle against the elements. Now, instead of continuing the battle, the state has decided to move the road.
On Oct. 17, the Southern Environmental Law Center issued a statement on behalf of opponents to the proposed Mid-Currituck Bridge, claiming that NCDOT is delaying building the seven-mile Currituck Sound crossing due to rising costs and lower traffic forecasts.
