As the Port of Alaska’s primary petroleum dock and the state’s only bulk cement-handling dock, this facility is a key part of the port, which serves as the main intermodal transport hub for freight movement in the state.

Originally built in the 1980s for industrial use, the historic Ivar’s Pier 54 was deteriorating and in need of seismic improvements following the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and a decade of deferred maintenance.
