Construction Spending Expected to Grow by More Than 5% in 2018

A decline in non-residential work will be more than offset by gains in residential and non-building activity.

In Portland, there is “tremendous growth” in hotel, residential and commercial development, Abuaf says. There are 15 hotels in the pipeline, and activity is healthy in residential and commercial construction tied to the area’s technology sector.

Many buildings 50 to 100 years old are being rehabilitated for office space for both technology and design firms. Many have open-plan office layouts, she adds. Portland developers continue to be focused on sustainable buildings, some of which contain cross-laminated timber products.
