This state-of-the-art, $9.2-million music venue was completed on time and on budget in April. The Atlantis is designed to pay homage to an earlier, iconic structure of that name that played a key role in downtown Washington, D.C.’s 1980s music scene.

The new location, an intimate space that can accommodate 450, has a wraparound mezzanine with prime views of the performance stage, two indoor bars and a rooftop bar. Offices and a green room also are included. The exterior mimics the original structure’s well-known stone facade. Along with carefully selected materials, more than 500 pieces were produced with a custom, laser-cut facade system.

High acoustic standards were achieved through a combination of techniques, with sound isolated with the help of steel components placed on acoustic bearings. The venue features Sound Transmission Class-rated doors and acoustic paneling throughout.

The project team overcame major supply chain issues during the construction process. MCN scrambled successfully to find alternative manufacturers of roof-top units while also installing CT cabinets to provide power until the main distribution panels arrived.

MCN also worked with Core to secure alternative metal panels for the building’s facade that maintained design quality while also staying within budget.

The cramped site, wedged between the existing 9:30 Club music venue and a large apartment building, also tested the team’s logistical and staging skills.
