A $46.4-million overhaul has modernized this 88,000-sq-ft facility into research and classroom laboratories with advanced MEP systems. A new roof and robust structural steel mechanical duct support system accommodate the upgraded mechanical and exhaust requirements. To safeguard the existing NanoSIMS Lab, a basement facility dedicated to meteorite research, the team constructed a protective enclosure around the lab, maintaining safe access for researchers. The lab is host to a highly sensitive laser microscope—an irreplaceable tool that is extremely sensitive to vibration, dust, air temperature and moisture—and the team had to ensure that its operations could continue throughout construction.

Completing the renovation while the complex was occupied added complexity. The Bateman complex spans more than 1 million sq ft and consists of seven wings. Utilities had to continue serving the entire complex while the D and E wings were dismantled and reconstructed.
