The supertall skyscraper’s lobby includes seven finished steel elevator bays, each reflecting a gradient from warm to cool colors that the project team says pays homage to steel construction’s industrial history. The lobby flooring matches the exact specifications of planks used on the nearby High Line track.
Achieving seven unique metal finishes for the lobby design involved a team of five finishers from three states, each with their own artistic techniques, who collaborated to create the finishes. Measuring up to 27 ft by 6 ft and weighing 1,900 lb, these quarter-inch steel panels required new material handling procedures and retooling of facilities for production.
Meticulous coordination was needed to deliver panels and various facade elements to the tight project site. The team used just-in-time deliveries for some materials to minimize site congestion.
The four-year project was completed at budget and on schedule.
