The team built a front entrance and two-story addition to an active hospital, completing the 155,000-sq-ft project early and under budget. The building houses an emergency department and Level 1 trauma center, a pediatric and neonatal transport center, pharmacy and shelled space for future development.

Before work began, the contractor established measures to keep the hospital operational while ensuring safety remained at the forefront of every decision. Moving into construction, Boldt utilized a non-destructive hydrovac excavation system for the Skywalk Building’s entrance canopy foundation work. Excavating inches from the facility’s current front door and the existing steam, electrical and water utilities, the work required extra safety precautions.

The project resulted in a tie-in to the existing building, limiting the time and impact on the hospital’s ongoing operations. An integrated project delivery method ensured continuous communication throughout design, fabrication and construction, which increased efficiency. A heat recovery chiller reduces energy consumption and provides annual operational cost savings.

Energy simulations, thermal modeling and third-party commissioning optimized envelope design, reducing HVAC loads and improving temperature control, airflow regulation and moisture control to improve comfort for those within the building and reducing energy costs.
