The team behind this 8,500-sq-m single-use, monoclonal antibody biotech production facility for animal medication needed to meet its schedule targets so the owner could meet the earliest possible product-to-market date. While similar projects of this scale typically take 30-36 months to complete, the team for this plant was able to complete it in just 23 months.
To accomplish that, the team used an integrated project delivery approach, which they say promoted communication and collaboration. There was a lot of overlap between design and construction phases but little room for deviation from the schedule, so team members selected trade partners that could meet design-assist requirements.
They used a federated building information model, with Jacobs acting as design integrator. Each trade contractor uploaded its individual design models to the federated model daily to enable coordination and allow the designers to resolve any issues.
The team also fabricated equipment off site concurrently with the building shell and core construction, further helping advance the work efficiently. According to the team, turnover involved 2,119 test packs, with 192 construction turnover packs used for 232 building, equipment and utility systems.
