Galileo's Pavilion at Johnson County Community College is an inspired learning space that also serves as an information center for the campus and the community. The facade of the LEED-Platinum-designed pavilion is clad in recycled slate chalkboard panels and large glass panels reclaimed from an unfinished building project. A glass louver system, highly insulated glass curtain walls, operable windows and skylights, and the thermal mass of the concrete floors manage the sun's heat and prevailing winds for passive heating, cooling and daylighting. Swire Coca-Cola USA, which touts itself as the third-largest independent bottler in the U.S., expanded its 402,577-sq-ft headquarters in Draper, Utah, to keep up with its fast-paced growth over the last few years and allow for future expansion. Additions were made to office, warehousing and distribution space. It's not often that designers get a chance to create a space for the people who make their designs a reality. In this project, Gensler teamed with Turner Construction to design a thoughtfully detailed and constructed office in a historic 1949 building. Located in Denver's vibrant Lower Downtown District, Turner's office has become not only a showcase for its craft but also a tool to demonstrate the company's strong, renewed presence in the Colorado and regional construction market. The 150,000-sq-ft L.S. Skaggs Pharmacy Institute was built to encourage creativity and spur major breakthroughs in research. Slated for LEED-Gold certification, this new building on the University of Utah campus has five floors, underground parking, research labs and conference rooms. Research spaces were built for maximum flexibility, efficiency and collaboration. A spacious four-story atrium serves as the building entry and connects the new institute with L.S. Skaggs Sr. Hall. The atrium also provides cafe and small lounge areas for faculty and students to discuss their research. The facility features an amphitheater for presentations and college events. The Village at South Campus is a five-story building that houses more than 900 Brigham Young University students in 236 apartments. A mix of housing, professional offices and commercial and retail businesses, it is intended to inspire a vibrant downtown and attract students. The new Residential Life Student Housing complex is at the south end of the Weber State University campus. Five residence halls were demolished to make way for its three buildings, which are three-level, above-grade steel-and-concrete, masonry-unit block structures, each with 40 to 60 units. They include lounges, gathering spaces, kitchenettes, work-out facilities, laundry rooms, meeting spaces, storage, building services areas, a convenience store and a commercial kitchen. The buildings form a quad in the center, where students can relax in front of a fire pit, enjoy beautifully landscaped walking paths or spend an afternoon at the sand volleyball court. Photo
This six-story, mixed-used project offers off-campus student housing, classrooms, restaurants and shops. The residence portion houses between three and five people per unit, each with private bedrooms. There are a total of 168 beds, and each apartment is equipped with wireless Internet, cable TV, a microwave, stove, dishwasher and washer/dryer.
