England The British government is planning to develop the Jackdaw and Culzean oil fields in the North Sea. These two new high-pressure, high- temperature fields could provide 10% of the U.K.'s gas demand when operating at peak rate. Maersk Oil and BG Group have been selected as the contractors. France The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is engaged in building the world's largest experimental tokamak nuclear-fusion reactor at the Cadarache research facility in southern France. Fusion for Energy (F4E), the organization managing Europe's role in the project, in March 2014 awarded two contracts, totaling $56 million, to Ferrovial Agroman for the construction of two buildings at the facility. One contract covers the construction of two 4,900-sq-meter buildings to house magnetic power conversion, converting alternating current into direct current to supply the tokamak's magnets. Under the second contract, Ferrovial Agroman will design and build the cooling tower and hot and cold water basins. The overall project entails the construction of 39 buildings and the tokamak vessel and is not expected to achieve first plasma until 2020. Indonesia Ormat Nevada, the general contractor, has started building the Sarulla geothermal powerplant in Sarulla, North Sumatra province. The 330-MW plant will supply electricity to Indonesia's state-owned electric company. The plant will be built in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2016. Malaysia Petronas is planning to build a refinery and petrochemical complex in Johor state. The project will involve building a 300,000-barrel-per-day refinery and a petrochemical complex capable of producing 7.7 million tons annually of specialty chemical products, such as synthetic rubbers and high-grade polymers. It also will include raw-water supply, power cogeneration plants and a liquefied-natural-gas regasification terminal. Technip has been selected as the program manager. Mexico The Secretariat of Communications and Transportation is planning to build a high-speed rail line from Mexico City to Toluca. The 76-kilometer line will have four intermediate stations and two main terminals and be capable of carrying 300,000 passengers a day on trains that can reach a speed of 160 km per hour. Oman The Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Co. (Orpic) has awarded two contracts for its Liwa Plastics Project. Engineers India Ltd. was awarded the project management contract, and Chicago Bridge & Iron was awarded the front-end engineering and design contract, which includes the steam-cracker license. The overall project cost is estimated at $3.6 billion. It will be located in the Sohar Industrial Port Area, adjacent to Orpic's refinery and petrochemical plants.
