The unexpected discovery of a large underground rock formation could have easily derailed construction of this $21.8-million, 76,000-sq ft cancer treatment center. But delivery dates for key components of the center’s technologically advanced treatment equipment were already set, so the 16-month, fast-tracked project simply could not wait, the project team says. By resequencing foundation work, the team got other sections of the building underway while the rock was removed. That plan proved more successful than anticipated. Steel erection began earlier than originally planned and was completed 10 weeks ahead of schedule. Work above occupied areas was completed at night to continue operations safely.
Despite unforeseen issues and frequent schedule revisions, lean construction concepts and close coordination with trades enabled work to progress and costs to be controlled. Repairs to the previous site owner’s parking lot even were incorporated into the project without increasing the total budget. In the end, the new cancer treatment facility was completed early, expediting delivery of medical services to patients of all ages.
