A 76,000-sq-ft hospital brings modern health care to Concordia, Kan., replacing an outdated 1950s-era facility. The $33.5-million project includes inpatient and outpatient services, a surgical suite, emergency department, lab imaging services, an MRI suite and physical and occupational therapy rehabilitation spaces. At schematic design, the team realized that the project was over budget by 5% to 7%, but quickly identified that the building’s footprint was larger than the program. A collaborative effort brought scope back within budget, where it remained through completion in October 2022. The design’s use of numerous exterior materials required careful transitions. Roof lines above the emergency department’s roof entry terminate into stone and stucco walls, for example. To ensure a seamless transition, the contractor determined that the roofing, flashing, stone and stucco should come together at various conditions, including complicated slopes between vertical and horizontal surfaces.
