The complete interior renovation of an existing hospital at the Houston Medical Center will help HCA expand its reach across the area and stay ahead of ever-increasing demand for top-tier health care. HCA purchased Park Plaza Hospital in 2017 with the intention of renovating the aged facility, which was originally built in the 1970s. Work covered more than 65% of the hospital, dramatically impacting the quality of care for patients and the work environment for hospital staff.

Scope of work included renovations to 12 departments and extensive modifications to the existing MEP systems, including the addition of six rooftop air handling units. This required structural support modifications to the roofs as well as slab cutting to install mechanical shafts from the roof downward across eight active floors. Meanwhile, all sprinkler systems were updated and all galvanized piping replaced with new copper piping, which required multiple tower-wide coordinated system shutdowns.

Since the team had little information regarding existing conditions and as-builts, crews regularly performed investigative demolition. Existing electrical systems were often found in areas not listed on the original drawings, so the electrical system underwent a redesign that would both streamline performance and document all components for future maintenance use.

Renovations were completed on time and within budget in December 2023.
