With this project’s location in northern Peru being periodically impacted by intense rainfall, often inundating public roads—and the area lacking systems to adequately handle such downpours—IDOM Consulting Engineering Architecture incorporated natural rainwater collection and drainage systems into the design of Sullana Hospital.
With this system, rainwater from roads and building roofs is initially collected and directed to four designated discharge points, with both internal and road drainage systems sealed so as to exclusively handle rainwater. Retention and infiltration areas further assist in averting runoff into public streets.
The project was delivered in a single phase using a fast-track approach that included simultaneous design and construction. General contractor OHLA attributed much of the project’s success to its comprehensive development within a BIM framework, which encompassed all stages from initial design through to construction, pre-installation specifications, installations, assembly and commissioning.
Noting that the Sullana community is characterized by extreme poverty, the project team said that “it is deeply satisfying to feel that our efforts have contributed to improving the lives of this population.”
